This week on Q Debut, Kristi is showcasing songs from Ashley McBryde’s newest project, “Lindeville.” A fictional town named for the late Nashville songwriter, Dennis Linde, with a fictional cast of characters that carry over from song to song. The concept started originally as a songwriting exercise and Ashley and her collaborators wrote songs about people whose lives and struggles intersected in a fictional town and she had the idea when all these characters came about to give them a place to live together.  Ashley chose to sing lead on a lot of the songs and she included old school radio jingles or “commercials” for the made up pawn shops, funeral homes, diners and the like in the fictional town of Lindeville.

Ashley teamed up with John Osborne of Brothers Osborne to produce the project and the other Osborne, TJ sings on one of the songs, “Play Ball” . Ashey thought it might be kind of boring to hear her sing all of the album, so she added other artists like Brandy Clark, Caylee Hammack and Pillbox Patti to some of the tracks. Each person takes on a character in the town. Ashley said casting the characters wasn’t a hard decision. Tune in each day this week  after 3PM to hear a new song from the album!

Bonfire at Tina’s – Ashley McBryde, Caylee Hammack, Brandy Clark & Pillbox Patti

“Bonfire At Tina’s” describes the fact that, in small towns, and really everywhere it seems sometimes, women are often taught to compete with other women instead of building them up. But when somebody gets their heartbroken, everybody knows it’s time to rally together and take that person down… word always gets around in a small town, right? Ashley said “I love this song. There’s nothing I don’t love about this song… ‘Small town women, we ain’t built to get along.’ We’re not. We’re not designed that way. We’re not raised that way. We’re not trained that way. We are trained to not like each other off the bat, but we’ll get together and hate somebody in a heartbeat. We don’t like each other, but we all don’t like that guy.”

Tuesday 11/15

Girl in the Picture – Ashley McBryde & Pillbox Patti

“The Girl In The Picture” is one of those songs where the girl is clearly wanting something more, but has already lived out her glory days as the pretty girl who “won the blue ribbon at the county fair,” and nothing more to the people in her town:

“It’s a shame that all she’ll ever be,
Is the girl in the picture
That won the blue ribbon
At the Faulkner County Fair.”

Play Ball – Ashley McBryde & Brothers Osborne

This song is about an old man named Pete who lives in Lindeville, but, the song is told from the perspective of a man who knew Pete as a child.

It’s likely we’ve all known someone like Pete at some point in our lives. He lost his wife to cancer and his thumb in Vietnam, but likes to tell people that “he used to be a hitchhiker, but not for very long.” He’s that old guy in church who always has a good dad joke.. I’m sure we can all relate to knowing someone like that.

“Play Ball,” is easy to kind of get choked up on… one of the lines is “The only life advice I have for you is go to church, love your mom and play ball.” Ashley said she knew TJ of Brothers Osborne had to sing on this song, she said “T.J. Osborne could sing anything and make you feel it.”
