How Desperate is Philadelphia for Life Guards?

Reportedly desperate enough they’re soliciting positions for the city’s public pools and ‘Knowing how to swim”  is NOT required!  The city of Philadelphia is preparing now for the summer season ahead.  The city’s Parks & Rec department telling Philadelphia Magazine that they are open to applicants who do not know how to swim.  The department explains they will give applicants swimming lessons free of charge at any of the local high schools.  Life guard positions start at $16- an hour,  35 hours a week.  Many municipalities and community pools across the country had problems last summer trying to fill  life guard positions and when they could not — ended up cutting neighborhood swimming hours for pools and kids desperate for some recreation time.  Philly says they’re willing to try whatever they can to not have this happen this summer.
