Keith Urban will make his American Idol debut as a new judge and the referee between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.
Executive Producer Nigel Lythgo was asked recently if Seacrest was expendable like the judges and replied, "Ryan Seacrest drives the entire program." (from a booster seat beacuse he's tiny) "He's not an earpiece or anything, he's not beholded to anybody. He controlls the show and is really important."
Nigel belives Idol is bigger than any one person and that showed when Simon Cowell left to start X-Factor, everyone said the show would die, it didnt, the producers don't look at it as a franchise beholden to any individual. Idol may not have the same popularity it once did but there doesn't appear to be any plans of stopping anytime soon.
