These are the five songs that meant the most to me this year…who knows, maybe some of them would be on your list too!
#5: “Love Can Go To Hell” by Brandy Clark. I believe that Brandy Clark is a National Treasure. She writes songs so beautiful and real that they steal my heart. And while the title of this one sounds like it’s gonna be a sad story, it’s really- to me- a story of hope and recognizing that we can’t control much of anything..and maybe that’s ok!
#4: “Dirt On My Boots” by Jon Pardi. My favorite JAM of the year. I just cannot resist the urge to turn it up, and sing along LOUD. It’s from a guy who had a pretty good year this year, and is on his killer album “California Sunrise”.
#3: “Every Little Thing” by Carly Pearce. This song HIT ME, when I first heard it. It sounded different, so it stood out, and the adjective I used after first hearing it was HAUNTING. And whattyaknow..it went on to be Carly Pearce’s first number one song.
#2: “Broken Halos” by Chris Stapleton. The first time I heard this song was two years ago when Stapleton performed it live, at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. He introduced it in the most humble way, saying, softly, “I wrote this for a friend I lost.” Now, two years later, it’s on his near-platinum second album, “From A Room: Volume 1.”
#1: “Better Man” by Little Big Town. Perhaps it’s odd that my choice for the number one song of the year is the same song that I picked for number one last year. You might ask, “how could that be, Fletch?” Welllll…. At this time last year, Little Big Town had just released “Better Man”. Normally when a song is released at the end of the year, it gets considered in the new year for best-of lists. But when it came out, just over a year ago, I thought it was SO good that I felt like it had already beaten out every other song released in 2016, so I picked it as my top song of last year. Of course, it went on to have a huge chart run well into 2017, where it finally peaked at #1 in May. And you know what? In addition to beating out every other song back in 2016, I think that “Better Man” beats out every other song of 2017, too!
