It really is OK to decline a gift. You’re just not supposed to do it twice. The difficulty with accepting a gift you don’t want, is it becomes clutter you have to solve. Everyone wants to exchange cookies and other baked goods around the holidays, but what are you supposed to do with sweets when you’re not a sweets eater?
Declining gifts doesn’t only apply to food.
People have declined gifts for years. If they hadn’t, how else would there be thrift stores filled to the rafters everywhere with ugly Christmas sweaters?
Maybe the real question should be, how do you decline a gift gently?
